Interview with an Apprentice
It’s the year anniversary of our Interview with an apprentice, so we thought we’d speak to Tom, who has now been working as an apprentice for the company for the past 6 months.
Tell us a little bit about yourself
I’m 26 years old, and I really enjoyed school and college. I actually went to golf college in Derby as I was hoping to become a professional golfer, however found that it actually took the fun out of something I enjoyed doing. Therefore decided not to pursue as a career and now just play in my spare time.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
After working in a supermarket for 7 years on stock control, I decided it was time to better myself for the future. Being a hands on person, I wanted to do something practical but learn at the same time.
What is your apprenticeship like, including the qualification side?
It is really enjoyable and get on well with my colleagues on site. I have already learnt so much in the role. I like being able to link the qualification to what I’m doing practically.
Do you get much support from your employer?
My colleagues are really supportive and are always there to answer questions and help me when needed.
Do you enjoy being an apprentice?
Yes because I get to learn at the same time as doing something that I enjoy.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting an apprenticeship?
No matter age you are, don’t get stuck in a dead end job. Just go for it and you’ll never look back!
What do you like to do outside of work?
Golf , fishing, exploring the outdoors and spending time with my girlfriend.
